Memoirs Of The Freedom Movement

With the Independence Day...

Independence Day – Does It Strike A Chord?

With the Independence Day just round the corner, how genuinely we connect with this revolution.  Have we, the younger generation to be precise, discounted the significance of our Independence to just a random thing.  Do we consider this an opportunity to skip the mundane, catch up with sleep or blemish it to buy merchandise at a wow discount?

British ruled India was very different from today’s times.  The exploitation was immense - we had to pay tax for working in our fields while employing our own countrymen and producing for our own consumption.  We did not even have the liberty to voice our concerns in our very own press.  We did not have the liberty to choose our education, to choose our work, to live our lives.  We were controlled, our dreams were constrained. We lived at their mercy.

The Indian struggle for freedom is immense.  Our people faced hardship, lived in poverty, gave up personal life and fought united for the single cause.  Many had to sacrifice their lives leaving behind their families helpless.

Let’s make an effort to know our history.  Let’s know the struggles, the sacrifices our ancestors made, so that we can live in a free country and live with the freedom to make our choice. Let us take pride in our country, its heritage.  Let us be proud of its diversity, equality and tolerance.  Let us celebrate every aspect of its vast history.
